Salling Clicker Review

As I havn’t had much time testing 3.5 exlusivly, it won’t be a 3.5 specific review. More a general review of Salling Clicker. If I find anything I think should be mentioned I will update this review, and make a post informing the readers :)

The long awaited Salling Clicker 3.5 has been released and along with support for newer handsets, there is a host of new features which I will cover here.

Firstly, for those who don’t know what Salling Clicker is, it is an application which allows you to control various elements of your Windows or OS X machine through your handset.

By installing a server application to your computer, and a client application to your handset, you have the ability to control applications such as iTunes, PowerPoint and your Mouse.

Taking advantage of Bluetooth, Salling Clicker allows you to control your machine from up to 30 feet away so when your feeling particually lazy, you can, for example, watch a film from the comfort of your bed, and have the ability to control say the volume, or pause the film without having to move.
New in version 3.5 is the support for Wi-Fi enabled handsets, so you can control, say, your music from anywhere in the house.

Another example is if you are in a meeting giving a PowerPoint presentation. You can stand at the front of the room where the presentation is being displayed, you can control the slides from your handset in a similar way to Steve Job’s at one of his Keynote presentations.

Call Integration
You know when you’re listening to music, and then the phone goes, you have to reach for the mute button or volume control which can be annoying, expecially if your sat back, relaxing. Well worry no more. Salling Clicker has the option to tell iTunes to pause or mute when you receive a call, and as soon as you hang up, your music will resume.

iTunes
Personally, I use Salling Clicker mainly for controlling my iTunes when I’m not at my desk. It gives me all the functions I need such as play/pause, volume control, the ability to browse and search my music and it even show’s me the album art of the track I’m playing.

Windows Media Player
I don’t use Windows Media Player so I can’t give any comment on it’s support for it, but I would imagine that Salling Clicker offers all of the same features with Media Player as with iTunes. The only thing I think might be different is displaying the Album Art, however, as I said I never use WMP so I can’t comment on that.

PowerPoint
The ability to control PowerPoint will be a handy feature for some of you. Those who have to give PowerPoint presentations all of the time, and get fed up having to return to the laptop to move onto the next slide will appreciate the ease with which you can flick through the slides in your presentation using your handset.

Mouse Control
The ability to control your mouse is very handy. Admittedtly it can be slightly irritating, but only down to the fact that controlling your Windows/OS X cursor using a little joystick takes some getting used to.
As well as control over the cursor, you of course have control over the buttons on your mouse also.

Plugins
Another great feature of Salling Clicker is it’s support for 3rd party plugins. This basically means that anybody with the know-how, or the interest in learning how, is able to create plugins to extend the functionality offered by Salling Clicker.
An example of the plugins on offer is one for Winamp support, PowerDVD support, MediaPortal (Media Centre) support, and the ability to have your computer unlock whenever you come near it.

Conclusion
Overall, Salling Clicker is the best there is in this category of Applications. The amount of options it contains, the amount of features it offers and the fact that the users can extend it’s features through plugins put it at the top of the table.

I give Salling Clicker an impressive 4.5 Stars
